The Sample Is Approved. Are We Done Yet?

2026-9-15The Sample Is Approved. Are We Done Yet?

There is a moment in product development that everyone looks forward to:

“The sample is approved.”

It sounds like a finish line.

The product has been checked, the sample has been confirmed, and everyone can finally move on.

Except… not quite.

Someone still needs to ask about the accessories.

Then there is the color box.

And the manual.

And the labels.

And sometimes another small detail that seemed insignificant a few days ago suddenly needs to be confirmed before production can move forward.

This is one of the interesting things about developing customized products. A sample can be finished without the entire project being finished.

The sample itself may have already gone through several rounds of changes. A software issue may have appeared during testing. A hardware problem may have shown up. Something may not have passed a test. A function may not have worked quite the way expected.

So the sample goes back for another round.

Then it comes back.

Then someone tests it again.

Sometimes the same function is adjusted more than once. Sometimes a change fixes one problem but creates another detail that needs attention.

There are plenty of moments when everyone probably thinks:

“This should be the last change.”

And then it isn't.

But there is another side to the story.

While the product is being adjusted, the rest of the project is moving too.

The accessories need to match the product. The packaging needs to be confirmed. The manual needs the right information. The labels need to be checked. The details that will eventually go into mass production all have to come together.

So “sample approved” is less like closing a door and more like opening the next one.

And perhaps that is why the final stage of a product project can feel surprisingly busy.

There is no single dramatic moment when everything suddenly becomes ready.

Instead, it happens through a collection of small confirmations:

This is okay.

That needs to be changed.

Let's test it again.

This part is confirmed.

What about the other one?

Until, eventually, there is nothing left on the list that needs another answer.

Then it really is time for production.

And maybe that is when someone can finally say:

“Now we're done.”
