The Design Choice Behind the M818’s External Antenna

If you have looked through JIMI’s MiFi products, you may have noticed something interesting.

The M818 comes with an external antenna as a standard feature.

However, not every MiFi model in our portfolio is designed with an external antenna.

So a natural question comes up:

If an external antenna is useful, why don’t we simply use the same design across the entire MiFi range?

The answer has less to do with adding more features and more to do with how we approach product design.

First, What Does an External Antenna Actually Do?

In simple terms, an external antenna gives the device more flexibility in how the antenna is positioned.

In some environments, the most suitable position for the device may not be the most suitable position for the antenna. An external antenna can provide more flexibility in these situations, which can be useful when the installation environment or signal conditions require a different antenna position.

Of course, this does not mean that a MiFi without an external antenna is unsuitable for normal use.

For many everyday applications, the built-in antenna design is already sufficient for the intended product positioning and usage.

An external antenna is therefore better understood as an option for certain application scenarios, rather than a simple measure of whether one MiFi is better than another.

Why Did We Choose an External Antenna for the M818?

The M818 was designed with an external antenna solution from the early stages of product development.

As the product design took shape, we decided to make the external antenna part of the M818’s standard configuration.

The goal was to give the M818 greater flexibility for applications where antenna placement may be an important consideration, while keeping the product practical for its intended use.

This is also why the antenna design of the M818 is different from that of some of our other MiFi models.

So Why Not Apply the Same Design to Every MiFi?

Because different products do not necessarily need the same answer.

A MiFi may look like a simple category of product, but each model involves its own design considerations.

Product size, internal space, portability, battery capacity, mechanical structure, antenna layout, and overall positioning can all influence the final design.

The external antenna is only one part of that decision.

A design that works well for the M818 does not automatically mean that the same approach should be copied across every other model.

Rather than making every MiFi identical for the sake of consistency, we prefer to look at each product on its own and determine what makes the most sense for that particular design.

We Care More About What Fits the Product Than Simply Having More Features

When developing a product, adding another feature can sometimes be the easiest decision.

The more important question is whether that feature actually belongs there.

For us, product design is often about finding the right balance between functionality, size, portability, cost, internal space, and the intended use of the device.

That is why you may see different antenna solutions across our MiFi range.

They are not simply different versions of the same design. Each model is developed with its own priorities in mind.

The M818 and its external antenna are just one small example of this approach.

We believe a good product is not necessarily the one with the longest list of features.

It is the one where each design choice has a clear reason behind it.
