So what does Cat.4 actually mean?
In simple terms, LTE Cat.4 is a category of LTE technology that defines certain capabilities of a cellular device, including its theoretical maximum data rates.
It is one of the commonly used LTE categories for 4G devices.
But there is an important point:
Cat.4 is not the same thing as the actual internet speed you will get.
“Cat.” is short for Category.
LTE categories are used to classify the capabilities of LTE devices.
For LTE Cat.4, the commonly referenced theoretical peak rates are:
Download: up to 150 Mbps
Upload: up to 50 Mbps
These figures describe the technology's theoretical capability under specified network conditions.
They are not a promise that a Cat.4 router will always download at 150 Mbps.
Actual performance depends on the network, signal conditions, operator configuration, supported frequency bands and other factors.
Cat.4 is an older LTE category, but that does not make it useless.
For many products, the goal is not to achieve the highest possible cellular speed.
A device may simply need to provide a stable mobile internet connection at a reasonable cost.
For example, a 4G router used for basic internet access, a portable WiFi device for everyday connectivity, or a simple wireless terminal may not require the additional capabilities of a higher LTE category.
In these cases, Cat.4 can still be a practical solution.
This is where product specifications can sometimes be confusing.
Two devices can both be described as LTE Cat.4, but that does not necessarily mean they will perform identically.
Other specifications matter too.
For example:
Which LTE bands are supported?
Which networks can the device work with?
How many users can connect through WiFi?
Which WiFi standard does it use?
What is the battery capacity?
Is the device designed for portable or fixed use?
Cat.4 describes an important part of the cellular capability, but it is only one part of the complete product.

4G is a broader term used to describe a generation of mobile network technology.
LTE Cat.4 is a more specific classification of a device's LTE capabilities.
A simple way to understand it is:
4G tells you the network generation.
Cat.4 tells you more about the LTE device capability.
This is why product specifications often include both terms:
4G LTE Cat.4
They are describing related but different aspects of the product.
Not necessarily.
For everyday applications such as web browsing, messaging, cloud-based work, video calls and general internet access, Cat.4 can provide sufficient performance when the mobile network itself is capable of delivering it.
The actual experience depends heavily on the network environment.
A Cat.4 device connected to a strong and lightly loaded network may perform better than a higher-category device connected to a congested or poorly supported network.
So it is better not to judge a wireless device from the LTE category alone.
One of the most common comparisons is Cat.4 vs. Cat.6.
The main difference is their theoretical peak data capability.

If you are selecting a 4G router or MiFi for a specific market, Cat.4 should be only one item on your checklist.
It is also worth checking:
LTE frequency bands
Network compatibility
WiFi standard
Number of supported devices
Power and battery requirements
SIM card compatibility
Device form factor
Operator requirements
This is especially important for products intended for different countries or network operators.
A device with the right LTE category may still be unsuitable if it does not support the required local bands.

That combination tells you much more about what the device can actually do.
