However, eSIM installation is not simply a matter of scanning a QR code.

Unlike a physical SIM card, the profile can be downloaded to a compatible device rather than being inserted manually.
For an eSIM-enabled Pocket WiFi or MiFi device, this means the device needs the appropriate hardware and software support to store and manage the profile.
The exact installation process can vary depending on the device, eSIM service provider and network configuration.
Although the user interface differs between products, the general process can be understood in several steps.
Before installation, the first question is whether the device actually supports eSIM.
This is more important than it may appear.
eSIM support requires appropriate device hardware and software. A device with a physical SIM slot cannot automatically support eSIM simply through a software update.

An eSIM profile is normally provided through an eSIM service or mobile operator.

On a compatible device, the user can start the eSIM installation through the available device interface.
Depending on the product design, this could involve:
Scanning a QR code
Entering activation information
Selecting an eSIM installation option
Following instructions through the device WebUI or another supported interface
The exact workflow should always follow the instructions provided for the specific device and eSIM service.
Once the required information is provided, the device can begin downloading the eSIM profile.
At this stage, the device needs a suitable connection for the profile download and activation process.
The process can therefore depend on more than the eSIM profile itself.
Device software, network availability and service configuration can all affect the result.
After the profile has been downloaded, it may need to be activated before the device can use the corresponding mobile network service.
Once activation is completed successfully, the device can proceed to network registration according to the profile and network conditions.
This is where eSIM installation moves from simply storing a profile to actually establishing mobile connectivity.
Installing an eSIM profile does not necessarily mean that the device is already connected to the internet.
There are several steps between profile installation and actual data access.
A simplified way to understand the process is:
eSIM Profile → Device Recognition → Network Registration → Data Service → Internet Access
If something goes wrong at one of these stages, the user may see a device that recognizes the eSIM but still cannot access the internet.
This is why troubleshooting should not stop at checking whether the eSIM profile has been installed.
When an eSIM installation does not result in a working connection, several factors may need to be checked.
The device must support the relevant eSIM technology and profile.
The eSIM profile needs to be downloaded correctly and available for use.
The device still depends on the mobile network available in the deployment location.
The device configuration needs to support the relevant network environment.
This includes considerations such as supported LTE bands and network requirements.

An eSIM can be successfully installed while the data connection still requires appropriate network configuration.
This is an area that is easy to overlook.
eSIM functionality is not only a hardware consideration.
The device firmware also needs to support the relevant operations involved in managing the eSIM profile and network connection.
Depending on the product architecture, firmware may be responsible for functions related to:
eSIM profile management
Network selection
Connection status
User interface
Configuration settings
Device status information
For this reason, eSIM support should be considered as part of the overall product architecture.
It is not simply a matter of replacing a physical SIM slot with an eSIM component.

For portable WiFi devices, WebUI can provide a convenient place for users to view network information and manage supported settings.
Depending on the product design, an eSIM-enabled WebUI may provide information related to:

A well-designed interface should make the installation and configuration process understandable without exposing unnecessary technical complexity to everyday users.
For an OEM customer, choosing eSIM support is not simply a matter of adding another feature to the product specification.
The project may require decisions about:
Target markets
eSIM service providers
Profile management
Hardware architecture
Firmware support
User interface
Network compatibility
Customer installation experience
These requirements are best discussed during the product development stage.
When the requirements are considered early, hardware, firmware and user experience can be developed as one complete solution.
From a user's perspective, eSIM may appear to be a replacement for a physical SIM card.
From a product development perspective, it is more useful to think of it as part of a larger connectivity system.
The physical device, eSIM profile, firmware, network configuration and mobile service all have to work together.
That is particularly important for Pocket WiFi and MiFi products intended for different markets.
A successful eSIM implementation is therefore not only about making the installation process work.
It is about making the entire connection process understandable and reliable for the person using the device.
Installing an eSIM on a portable WiFi device involves several stages, from confirming device compatibility and obtaining an eSIM profile to downloading, activating and connecting to a mobile network.
The process may look simple from the user's perspective, but successful eSIM connectivity depends on several components working together.
For manufacturers and OEM customers, this makes eSIM an important consideration during product development.
When hardware, firmware, WebUI, network compatibility and user requirements are considered together, eSIM can become a practical part of a modern portable connectivity solution rather than simply another feature on a specification sheet.
